Abstract
This article examines how a newcomer is socially integrated into a small hospitality establishment (SHE) in Japan, specifically a neighborhood bar, using a sociopragmatic framework. It highlights the central role of the Mamasan (female owner) and regular customers in facilitating initial interactions through fluid, informal introductions, safe questions, and culturally appropriate listening behaviors such as aizuchi (supportive feedback). The study finds that introductions in this context are dispersed and less formal than scripted self-introductions, emphasizing personalized engagement and rapport-building that reflect broader Japanese cultural norms of politeness and community inclusion. While based on a single 102-minute recorded interaction, the findings underscore the importance of linguistic and social strategies in welcoming newcomers and fostering a comfortable, inclusive atmosphere within local bar communities.
