Abstract

The article focuses on the challenges and advancements in providing palliative care for individuals with dementia in the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, through the implementation of the Desired Dementia Care Towards End of Life (DEDICATED) approach. Research from Maastricht University highlights the needs of healthcare professionals in these regions and their experiences with the DEDICATED approach, which aims to enhance person-centered palliative care. A needs assessment revealed significant areas for improvement, particularly in familiarization with dementia patients and advance care planning. Cultural factors, including taboos surrounding discussions of death, were identified as barriers to effective implementation, indicating a need for further adaptation of the approach to local contexts.
