Abstract

This article focuses on the introduction, acceptability, and six-month continuation of the Caya diaphragm, a single-size, non-hormonal contraceptive device, among women in southern Benin, West Africa. The pilot study involved 225 women adopters, 15 men, and 15 healthcare providers in urban and peri-urban settings, revealing a 76.4% continuation rate at six months, with higher continuation among less-educated women and those with children. Users and providers valued Caya for its lack of hormonal side effects, autonomy in use, and compatibility with fertility awareness methods, although some discontinuations were linked to insertion difficulties and partner opposition. The findings suggest that Caya could expand contraceptive options in francophone West Africa, particularly for women seeking non-hormonal methods or complementary use with fertility awareness, while highlighting the need for enhanced user support and partner engagement.
