Abstract
This article focuses on Samuel Langhorne Clemens's (Mark Twain's) early years in Carson City, Nevada Territory, beginning with his arrival in 1861 alongside his brother Orion Clemens, who was appointed Secretary of the Territory by President Abraham Lincoln. It details the frontier environment they encountered, including a notable shootout, and describes key local figures, buildings, and events that shaped Clemens's experiences, such as his timber claim venture at Lake Tahoe and his work as a reporter for the Territorial Enterprise. The article also highlights the origins of Twain's pen name in a 1863 article published in Virginia City and explores the social and political milieu of the rapidly developing capital, including the roles of Governor James Nye and other contemporaries. Primary sources such as newspapers, land records, and personal memoirs underpin the account, emphasizing the historical context of Twain's formative period in Nevada.
