Abstract

This article examines the interconnected processes of urbanization and industrialization and their role in the emergence of popular culture and media within cities. It highlights how urban development and representations of cities in popular culture shape public imagination and communicative practices among urban residents. Drawing on interdisciplinary scholarship from urban communication, sociology, architecture, and cultural studies—including contributions from figures such as Lewis Mumford, Jane Jacobs, Henri Lefebvre, and the Birmingham School—the article explores cities as dynamic media that both influence and are influenced by cultural production, social relations, and political power. It also contrasts British and American cultural studies approaches to urban culture, emphasizing the political agency of urban populations and the ecological impact of communication technologies on city life.
