Abstract
An alliance of South Sudanese opposition parties recently gathered in the capital, Juba, to demand unimpeded access to participate in the country's first national elections since gaining independence in 2011. The elections, originally scheduled for 2015, have been repeatedly delayed due to ongoing challenges, including the failure to pass a constitution. President Salva Kiir has pledged to hold elections in 2024, but opposition leaders argue that more time is needed to ensure the necessary conditions for a free and fair election. The head of the UN mission in South Sudan has emphasized the importance of all political parties being able to campaign freely and the need for the active participation of civil society to support a credible process.
