Abstract
The article focuses on the logbook of the whaling ship Indian Chief, maintained by first mate Thomas Bloomfield during its voyage from October 1842 to April 1844. The log documents the ship's journey through the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans, including the coast of Brazil and ending in Bermuda, recording daily weather conditions and whaling activities. Notably, Bloomfield recounts an incident on 4 September 1843 when he was knocked out of his boat by a sperm whale but was unharmed. The voyage resulted in the capture of 2,600 barrels of oil, 200 barrels of spermaceti, and 27,000 pounds of whale bone, with detailed records of catches and locations maintained throughout.
