Abstract
This article focuses on the housing crisis affecting Inuit communities in Nunavut, Canada’s largest northern region, where overcrowding, poor-quality housing, homelessness, and severe shortages have led to significant health, social, and educational challenges. The crisis stems from historical government policies promising social welfare that proved inadequate, combined with rapid population growth, high construction costs, and reduced federal funding through programs administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The article highlights the urgent need for stable and predictable funding, construction of transitional and modular homes suited to Arctic conditions, policy reforms regarding staff housing, and increased Inuit involvement in housing decisions. It emphasizes that addressing this crisis is critical to improving the well-being of Nunavut’s predominantly young Inuit population and calls for coordinated action by federal, regional, and territorial governments.
