Abstract

This article examines the presence and scope of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Two-Spirit, and queer (LGBT2SQ) inclusive policies in long-term care (LTC) homes in northwestern Ontario. An environmental scan and survey of eight LTC administrators revealed a widespread absence of formal LGBT2SQ-specific policies, limited staff training, and reliance on ad hoc approaches to resident care, despite administrators’ openness to future training. The findings highlight systemic gaps between national legal protections and institutional practices, with many LGBT2SQ older adults likely concealing their identities due to fear of discrimination. The study calls for targeted policy reforms, including standardized intake procedures, mandatory staff education, and anti-discrimination measures, to ensure affirming, person-centred care for LGBT2SQ seniors in LTC settings.
