Abstract

This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of individuals maintaining sobriety from substance use while residing in rural areas. Data were gathered through an online survey with open-ended prompts, and responses from 20 participants were analyzed using consensual qualitative research. The findings revealed five key domains: (1) the onset and progression of substance use during adolescence, (2) the complex role of family influence, (3) challenges associated with maintaining sobriety in rural settings, (4) insights into the strategies for maintaining sobriety while living rural, and (5) the benefits of sustaining sobriety. The study also offers categories of experiences and implications for professional counseling, providing advocacy and a deeper understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals in rural areas who are striving to maintain sobriety.
