Abstract

This article analyzes mainstream news coverage of Jurassic Park, the outdoor fan viewing area in downtown Toronto where thousands gathered to watch the Toronto Raptors during the 2019 National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs. Journalists depicted Jurassic Park as an assemblage of human and non-human matter, emphasizing how the collective movement of fans’ bodies, sounds, and waste transformed the space into an intimate and emotionally charged place. The coverage used liquid- and electricity-related metaphors to describe the dynamic interactions within the space, while also highlighting the temporary nature of fan unity and the environmental impact of spectator-generated waste. The article further critiques these narratives for reflecting settler colonial perspectives of Toronto and for overlooking Indigenous conceptualizations of place, particularly the sacredness of water and the long-term ecological consequences of pollution.
