Abstract
The article examines the history of Polish revisionist Marxist political economy from 1956 to 1968, focusing on the intellectual trajectory of Włodzimierz Brus and the Faculty of Political Economy (Wydział Ekonomii Politycznej [WEP]) at the University of Warsaw, which he co-founded. It traces the evolution of Polish Marxist economics from Stalinist orthodoxy toward revisionism advocating decentralization and market mechanisms within socialism, highlighting the relative academic freedom during the post-Stalinist "Thaw" and its subsequent curtailment amid internal Party power struggles. The study draws on archival documents and later interviews with WEP faculty and students to show how political repression culminated in the 1968 purges that dissolved the WEP and marginalized revisionist economists like Brus. The legacy of this period includes the influence of market socialism ideas on later Eastern European reforms and the enduring memory of the WEP as a vibrant center of Marxist economic debate prior to its suppression.
