Abstract
The US has imposed sanctions on Liberian Finance Minister Samuel Tweah and two senators, Albert Chie and Emmanuel Nuquay, for their alleged involvement in corruption. The Treasury accused them of offering bribes to manipulate legislative processes and public funding. As a result of the sanctions, Tweah, Chie, and Nuquay, as well as their immediate family members, are now barred from entering the US. Liberia, a country still recovering from civil wars and the Ebola outbreak, ranks 142nd out of 180 nations on Transparency International's corruption perceptions index. Last week, the Treasury also sanctioned Monrovia's mayor, Jefferson Koijee, for engaging in corrupt acts and pressuring anti-corruption investigators. [Extracted from the article]
