Abstract

This article examines the consumption patterns of four neglected and underutilized species (NUS)—Adansonia digitata (baobab), Ocimum gratissimum (African basil), Vigna radiata (mung bean), and Moringa oleifera—in households across three communes (Natitingou, Toucoutouna, and Tanguiéta) in Atacora, northern Benin. Using a 7-day food recall survey during periods of food abundance and scarcity, the study found that baobab and moringa-based foods were the most widely consumed year-round, with baobab seed sauce and fresh moringa leaves sauce more common during scarcity. Consumption frequency varied by household location and mother's occupation, with higher intake among mothers who were students, hairdressers, or seamstresses compared to housewives. The findings suggest that promoting these species could enhance nutritional awareness and food security in the region.
