Abstract
The article focuses on the cultivation and marketing of food crops in the South West Region of Cameroon, highlighting the region's ethnic diversity, fertile volcanic soils, and agricultural economy dominated by smallholder farms. Key food crops include yams, cocoyams, plantains, bananas, maize, okra, hot peppers, oil palms, kolanuts, and manioc, many of which have indigenous origins or were introduced during colonial times. The study details traditional farming practices, land tenure systems, and the role of periodic rural markets as vital centers for trade, social interaction, and potential service delivery. It also discusses challenges such as nutrient deficiencies, limited livestock rearing due to disease, rural-urban migration, and the need for improved rural infrastructure and services aligned with market activities.
