Abstract
The article focuses on recent political and economic developments in Africa, highlighting key issues in Ethiopia, South Africa, Morocco, the US-Africa trade relationship, Mozambique, and Kenya. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) accused Ethiopian National Defense Force troops of intentionally killing three aid workers in Tigray in 2021, a claim Addis Ababa has not investigated, increasing pressure on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. South Africa’s G20 presidency achieved a consensus communiqué despite US non-participation, though substantive progress on African priorities remains limited. Morocco is negotiating a formal EU migration control deal amid broader EU funding increases for the region. The US administration under Donald Trump has threatened tariffs on several African countries, complicating prospects for revamping the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act. In Mozambique, TotalEnergies plans to resume its $20 billion LNG project with government support, while Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission received new leadership after two years of inactivity, facing challenges related to voter registration and political credibility ahead of the 2027 elections.
