Abstract

Eight candidates, including incumbent Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and his jailed predecessor Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, have submitted their candidacies for Mauritania's upcoming presidential election. Aziz, who was previously ruled out of the race, surprised many by submitting his paperwork on the night of the deadline, despite lacking the necessary sponsorships. It remains uncertain if Aziz will be able to run even if he obtains the required sponsorships, as Mauritania's constitution states that the president can only be re-elected once. Other prospective candidates include the leader of the Islamist opposition party and a human rights activist. [Extracted from the article]
