Abstract
The article focuses on *Codex República*, a film project that uses hand-processed nitrate reels from early twentieth-century Cuban newsreels alongside contemporary images of the 2021 Cuban protests to explore themes of power, repression, revolution, and memory. Through slowed-down archival footage and meditative soundscapes, the project reflects on Cuba's historical and ongoing struggles, revealing how past and present temporalities intertwine. It evokes philosophical ideas about history's cyclical nature and the persistence of oppression, presenting Cuba's history as a spectral journey that illuminates hidden dimensions of power. The work transforms archival images into a medium for contemplating national identity, collective memory, and the enduring impact of political upheaval.
