Abstract
West Africa has a long history of gold mining, dating back to the ancient Ghana empire. The region remains a global leader in gold production, contributing approximately 10.8% of the world's total output as of 2024. Most gold deposits in West Africa are found within the West African craton, an ancient geological formation that spans several countries in the region. Modern exploration tools, such as geochemical techniques and advanced geophysical surveys, are being used to discover new gold deposits in the region. [Extracted from the article]
