Effect of calcium application on rice ears for suppressing cesium transfer from roots to brown rice.

Abstract

This article focuses on investigating the suppression of radioactive cesium (Cs) translocation from roots to brown rice by immersing rice ears in calcium (Ca) solutions during the ripening period. The study found that immersing ears in CaCl₂ solutions significantly reduced Cs concentration in brown rice, with the effect varying depending on the type of Ca salt used; CaCl₂ was more effective than calcium nitrate or calcium acetate. Comparatively, potassium (K) immersion also inhibited Cs translocation but required higher concentrations than Ca. A negative correlation between Ca and Cs concentrations in brown rice suggests that Ca accumulation may suppress Cs translocation, highlighting a potential method to control radioactive Cs contamination in rice during stages when root absorption suppression is less effective.
