Abstract

A recent study challenges the long-held belief that plate tectonics began almost as soon as Earth had solid ground roughly 4 billion years ago. The research suggests that the chemical signatures found in Earth's early crust, dating back to the Hadean eon, may not necessarily indicate the presence of plate tectonics. Instead, these signatures could have formed due to the differentiation of Earth's core, mantle, and crust during the planet's early stages. The findings highlight the complexity of Earth's geological history and suggest that plate tectonics may have emerged later, between 3.2 billion and 2.7 billion years ago.
