Abstract

The article focuses on a study analyzing data from China's Zhurong Mars rover, which found geological evidence suggesting that Mars once had ancient beaches similar to those on Earth. Using ground-penetrating radar, researchers identified sloping underground reflectors in Utopia Planitia that resemble coastal sedimentary formations, supporting the presence of a vanished ocean covering much of Mars’s northern lowlands about 3 billion years ago. The study concludes that these formations are unlikely to have been shaped by wind or rivers, indicating a coastal environment that may have supported conditions favorable to microbial life. This research contributes to understanding Mars’s watery past and its potential habitability.
