Multifiller-based polymer composites for shielding high energy ionising radiation.

Abstract
This article focuses on the development and characterization of novel polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rubber-based polymer composites filled with high atomic number metals molybdenum (Mo) and bismuth (Bi) for gamma radiation shielding applications. Two composites, named 1MMB and 2MMB, were fabricated via open mold casting and analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and gamma ray spectrometry to assess their structural and shielding properties. The composites demonstrated increased linear and mass attenuation coefficients compared to conventional materials like lead and barite at 356 keV gamma rays, while maintaining lightweight and flexible characteristics suitable for protective garments. The study suggests these composites as environmentally friendly, effective alternatives to toxic and heavy lead-based shielding materials.
