Abstract

The article focuses on the use and outcomes of coarse woody habitat (CWH) and artificial habitat enhancements to mitigate habitat loss and sustain fish productivity in natural lakes and reservoirs. It reviews how physical, biological, and ecosystem contexts—such as trophic status, turbidity, watershed land use, and fish community composition—influence the effectiveness of these habitat enhancements. Case studies from a north-temperate natural lake in Wisconsin and eutrophic reservoirs in Illinois illustrate that responses to CWH additions vary by ecosystem type, water clarity, and spatial position within reservoirs. The article emphasizes that management strategies should consider these ecosystem-specific factors and that further whole-ecosystem research is needed to evaluate fish productivity responses and balance potential increases in angler harvest with habitat enhancement benefits.
