Abstract

This article provides an in-depth narrative analysis of one British-born Nigerian woman's experiences of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), using the voice-centred relational or Listening Guide (LG) method developed by Gilligan and colleagues. It highlights how religious practices, specifically "spiritual baths" administered by a pastor, and patriarchal family structures contributed to the abuse and silencing of the survivor's voice. The study underscores the complex interplay of cultural, religious, and gendered power dynamics that affected disclosure and help-seeking, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive social work interventions and effective safeguarding policies within religious settings. The survivor's coping strategies involved embracing Christian faith and motherhood, illustrating resilience amid ongoing psychological distress.
