Effect of Vitamin B12 Supplementation on Hematological and Athropometric Parameters in Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition, Aged 1 to 60 Months in Nutritional Rehabilitation Center (RCT).

Abstract

This article focuses on evaluating the effects of vitamin B12 supplementation on hematological and anthropometric parameters in children aged 1 to 60 months with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). In a double-blind randomized controlled trial conducted in North India, 107 SAM children were divided into two groups, with one group receiving daily vitamin B12 supplementation for six weeks alongside standard World Health Organization (WHO) treatment. The study found a high prevalence of anemia (79.43%) characterized mainly by microcytic hypochromic and macrocytic anemia. While vitamin B12 supplementation did not significantly alter most hematological parameters compared to the control group, it was associated with significant improvements in weight-for-age and height-for-age z scores after six weeks. These findings suggest that vitamin B12 supplementation may benefit growth indices in SAM children without markedly affecting anemia-related blood parameters.
