Abstract
The article discusses the prevalence of health anxiety, also known as hypochondria, in today's society. It highlights the ease of online medical self-diagnosis and the increasing use of powerful medical technologies, which contribute to heightened health worries. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) eliminated the diagnosis of hypochondriasis in 2013 and introduced two new diagnoses, illness anxiety disorder and somatic symptom disorder. However, these new diagnoses fail to fully capture the complex nature of hypochondria. The article explores the historical evolution of hypochondria and its association with changing conceptions of wellness and disease. It also emphasizes the challenges faced by patients with health anxiety and the need for a more nuanced understanding of the condition. [Extracted from the article]
