Abstract

In "The Instability of Truth," historian Rebecca Lemov delves into the topic of brainwashing in Chinese reeducation camps and its impact on American POWs during the Korean War. She discusses how a mix of Maoist indoctrination and psychoanalysis, along with techniques like journaling and "speaking bitterness," were used to emotionally resonate with the POWs. Lemov also explores how similar techniques are employed by American religious cults to lure recruits, highlighting the initial sense of empowerment and belonging that individuals may feel before it turns into a negative experience. Additionally, she reflects on her own experience with the academic "cult" of French literary theory in grad school and how she eventually found her way out of it. [Extracted from the article]
