Abstract

This article systematically reviews the psychological comorbidities associated with childhood-onset psoriasis (COP), focusing on anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. The review of 12 selected studies reveals that children with psoriasis have significantly higher risks of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, substance abuse—particularly smoking and alcohol use—and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The findings emphasize that psychological distress in COP patients is not necessarily correlated with the severity of physical symptoms, underscoring the importance of early and regular mental health screening starting around age 11. The article advocates for a multidisciplinary care approach involving dermatologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists to address both the physical and psychological aspects of COP and improve overall quality of life.
