Abstract
This article examines the efficacy of prophylactic antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in preventing seizures after brain tumor excision in patients without a prior history of seizures. A review of studies from 2000 to 2021 found no statistically significant difference in postoperative seizure rates between patients who received AEDs and those who did not. The most commonly used AEDs were Phenytoin and Levetiracetam, and early seizures were the most frequent postoperative seizure type. The authors conclude that current evidence is insufficient to recommend routine prophylactic AED use for seizure prevention following brain tumor surgery.
