Abstract

This article investigates obstetric violence experienced by incarcerated mothers in Spanish prisons through a feminist bioethics and intersectional framework. Based on qualitative research involving thirty women in four mother-and-child prison units, it documents violations of autonomy, inadequate medical care, coercive interventions, and emotional neglect during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and breastfeeding. The study highlights how imprisonment intensifies structural gender inequalities and systemic human rights abuses, severely restricting incarcerated women's decision-making and access to respectful obstetric care. It calls for gender-sensitive, feminist-informed public policies, specialized training for healthcare and prison staff, and the implementation of support networks to uphold reproductive rights and dignity within carceral settings.
