Abstract
The article focuses on familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a genetic condition causing extremely high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels that significantly increase the risk of early heart disease. FH affects about 1 in 250 people in the U.S. and often goes undiagnosed due to lack of routine screening, despite its serious health implications. Early cholesterol screening, especially for children with a family history of heart disease, and timely treatment with medications such as statins and PCSK9 inhibitors are crucial for managing FH effectively. The article highlights the need for greater awareness among both the public and healthcare providers to improve early diagnosis and intervention, which can lead to better health outcomes for those with FH.
