Abstract

This article focuses on the integration and evaluation of digital health technologies (DHTs) in managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic gastrointestinal disorder including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It reviews four main DHT modalities—telemedicine, smartphone applications, artificial intelligence (AI), and wearable devices—highlighting their mechanisms, clinical applications, evidence of efficacy, and challenges such as patient engagement, data privacy, cost, and interoperability. The authors propose a tiered deployment framework matching technology intensity to patient risk, ranging from basic tools (education and symptom tracking) to advanced AI-driven analysis and continuous wearable monitoring for high-risk cases. While DHTs show promise in improving symptom monitoring, self-management, and healthcare resource use, the article notes gaps in long-term data, standardization, and equitable access, emphasizing the need for further multicenter trials and ethical governance.
