Supervision and Training Issues in the Practice of Addictions Treatment: Factors That Impact Workforce Retention.

Abstract
This article examines how supervision and training influence workforce retention in the addictions treatment field in New York State (NYS). Using a quantitative cross-sectional study of 167 addictions professionals, the research found that consistent supervision and positive supervisory relationships significantly reduce the likelihood of professionals leaving their positions, while poor supervision and training correlate with lower job satisfaction and higher turnover. The study highlights that effective supervision, as defined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), supports professional development, ethical practice, and workforce stability. Limitations include the study’s focus on NYS and challenges in participant recruitment, but findings emphasize the importance of investing in supervision and training to enhance workforce retention and improve care quality in addictions treatment.
