Abstract

This article focuses on evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in a UK secondary care private clinic setting. In a prospective study of 444 lesions from 326 patients, RCM combined with clinical examination and dermoscopy demonstrated a sensitivity of 98.8% and specificity of 85.5% for BCC diagnosis, outperforming clinical examination alone or combined with dermoscopy. The study found that RCM can be rapidly learned and integrated into clinical workflows, potentially reducing the need for invasive biopsies and diagnostic delays. These findings support the adoption of RCM as a routine diagnostic tool for BCC in the UK, complementing existing methods and improving diagnostic confidence.
