Abstract
This article focuses on the economic impact of reducing post-operative teaching visits following inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) implantation in urology practices. Using American Medical Association data and Medicare reimbursement rates, the study modeled how eliminating one 30-minute teaching visit within the 90-day postoperative period could recapture physician time, allowing for increased patient care and additional Medicare reimbursement. Results showed that practices performing 25 to 100 IPP implants annually could significantly increase office visit capacity and revenue by reallocating saved time to other procedures, such as new erectile dysfunction patient evaluations or vasectomies. The study suggests that optimizing post-operative care can improve practice efficiency and patient access amid urologist shortages and rising demand for ED treatment.
