Abstract

This article evaluates the effectiveness of a custom-developed role-playing video game designed to improve intensive care unit (ICU) nurses' knowledge of train-of-four (TOF) monitoring, a method used to assess neuromuscular blockade. In a single-arm pretest–posttest study involving 17 surgical ICU nurses, participants showed a significant increase in knowledge scores after a 15-minute tablet-based game, with 88.2% finding the game engaging and 100% reporting educational benefit. The game's interactive and user-friendly design was well received, promoting active learning and confidence without requiring prior training. While the study's small sample size and lack of a control group limit generalizability, findings suggest gamified learning may be a promising tool for continuing education in critical care nursing.
