Abstract

This article focuses on the relationship between resistance to attentional distraction and working memory (WM) function in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The study assessed 128 U.S. military veterans using the WAIS-IV Digit Span test for WM and electroencephalography during an Eriksen Flanker task to measure resistance to attentional capture (RAC) via the P1 event-related potential. Results indicated that better WM performance was linked to greater RAC, reflected in larger P1 amplitudes during trials with distracting stimuli, and that PTSD was associated with altered electrophysiological responses related to RAC. These findings suggest that early perceptual brain responses involved in resisting distraction support WM function and are affected in PTSD.
