Abstract
This article examines the phenomenon of human companionship with ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, focusing on its role as a temporary refuge for individuals facing emotional crises. Using Lacanian discourse theory, the study identifies the structure of the hysteric's discourse in users’ interactions with ChatGPT, where users question the AI as a master of knowledge but encounter its limitations in fulfilling deeper desires. It further reveals how capitalist discourse emerges as users gain agency to train and shape ChatGPT’s responses, transforming unresolved desires into consumable demands within a cycle of emotional commodification. The research highlights concerns about the commercialization of emotional needs through AI companionship, situating ChatGPT as both a technological product and a site of capitalist consumption.
