Abstract
The article focuses on evaluating the effect of vasopressin infusion in neonates with refractory shock, defined as shock unresponsive to standard inotropes and hydrocortisone. In a retrospective cohort study of 32 neonates treated in a level 3B neonatal intensive care unit in northern India, vasopressin administration was associated with significant improvements in systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressure, as well as increased urine output after 48 hours. However, vasopressin therapy was also linked to a significant decrease in serum sodium levels. The study suggests vasopressin may serve as a rescue therapy in refractory neonatal shock but highlights the need for randomized controlled trials to confirm these findings.
