Abstract

Fisher's experience of treatment and recovery are the reader's entry point into the history of alcohol and drugs, but at times the book strains to see beyond them. Fisher's personal story of addiction and recovery propels the historical narrative forward and parallels the experiences of the historical figures he discusses. Carl Erik Fisher, an addiction physician, bioethicist, and a person in long-term recovery, has written two books under one cover. [Extracted from the article]
