Abstract
This article examines the impact of obesity on sperm parameters in healthy young adult males by analyzing semen samples from 135,578 sperm donors across the United States between 2008 and 2021. The study found that men with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher had significantly lower total motile sperm counts and semen volumes compared to normal-weight men, despite all values remaining within World Health Organization (WHO) normal ranges. By focusing on donors without obesity-related comorbidities, the research highlights the association between higher BMI and reduced sperm quality independent of other health conditions. The findings underscore the importance of maintaining a healthy weight in early adulthood to support optimal sperm parameters amid rising obesity and infertility concerns.
