Abstract

This article reports the first clinical use of The Insides® Channel, a device developed by The Insides® Company in New Zealand, to enable reinstallation of chyme from one stoma to a distant second stoma in a 72-year-old patient following extensive bowel resection. The patient, who had multiple stomas after emergency surgery for visceral organ necrosis, benefited from chyme transfer between a high-output ileostomy and an ascending colon stoma, which reduced stoma output and improved bowel integrity prior to surgical reconnection. The Insides® Channel extends previous chyme reinfusion technology by allowing chyme transfer between separate stoma bags, facilitating gastrointestinal continuity outside the body. Although the patient remained inpatient due to ongoing nutritional challenges, the device contributed to improved colon quality and reduced reliance on parenteral nutrition, with potential cost savings compared to standard care.
