Abstract

This study compares the impact of an electronic health record (EHR)–integrated perpetual inventory management system (EIMS) versus a traditional inventory management system (TIMS) on pharmacy inventory accuracy, visibility, and turnover at Houston Methodist Hospital's oncology satellite pharmacy. Results showed that EIMS implementation significantly improved inventory accuracy by 6.02% and nearly doubled inventory visibility, capturing 264 items compared to 133 with TIMS. Although monthly inventory turnover increased slightly, the change was not statistically significant. The study highlights that EIMS integration with the EHR facilitates real-time data capture and streamlined workflows, enhancing inventory management critical for patient care and financial stewardship, while noting limitations such as the study's focus on a single pharmacy site and a subset of inventory items.
