Abstract
The article focuses on providing inclusive germline cancer genetic counseling for transgender and nonbinary (TG/NB) individuals, emphasizing the need to eliminate barriers and deliver culturally sensitive care throughout the counseling process. It outlines distinctions between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, and gender expression, and highlights updated pedigree nomenclature that respects gender identity while incorporating sex assigned at birth for accurate risk assessment. The article discusses communication strategies, anticipatory guidance, and the importance of addressing concerns related to gender-affirming care, hormone use, and cancer risk management tailored to patients’ organs rather than gender identity. It also underscores the role of nurses and healthcare providers in fostering inclusive environments, using appropriate terminology, and advocating for research and resources to improve care for TG/NB patients undergoing genetic testing.
