Abstract
This article focuses on a study from Sungkyunkwan University College of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea, examining the relationship between hypochondriasis and suicidality in psychiatric outpatients. The research analyzed clinical records of 5,484 patients and found that anxiety and depression mediate a positive association between hypochondriasis and increased suicidality, while a direct association between hypochondriasis and decreased suicidality was observed, particularly stronger in younger patients. Overall, the indirect effects via anxiety and depression outweighed the direct negative association, resulting in a net positive link between hypochondriasis and suicidality. The study used standardized scales including the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and applied a parallel mediation model adjusted for age and sex.
