Abstract

The article focuses on a quality improvement project aimed at enhancing the safe prescribing practices of benzodiazepines and z-drugs in a primary care setting. The author, a newly qualified GP, observed high prescription rates of these medications in their practice and implemented a multistep approach to reduce their use, which included creating a standardized policy, conducting patient reviews, and promoting awareness of the associated risks. Over a two-month period, the practice achieved a significant reduction in prescriptions, with a 37% decrease in benzodiazepines and a 38% decrease in z-drugs. The project highlights the potential for newly qualified healthcare professionals to lead similar initiatives to improve patient safety and prescribing practices.
