Abstract

The article focuses on research conducted at the Medical University of Gdansk, Poland, examining the prevalence of nicotine misuse among patients with schizophrenia, which is significantly higher than in the general population, estimated at 70-90%. The study involved 81 male patients and assessed the relationship between smoking, psychopathology, hospitalization, antipsychotic dosage, and adverse events. Findings indicated that non-smokers experienced more severe depressive symptoms and required higher doses of antipsychotics compared to smokers, although these differences lost significance after adjusting for initial severity. The research suggests that while smoking may influence certain schizophrenia symptoms, smoking cessation efforts should not be postponed for these patients. [Extracted from the article]
