Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy examined the risk of fractures in patients who were concurrently using calcium channel blockers (CCBs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for hypertension and depression. The study found that concomitant use of CCBs and SSRIs was associated with a higher risk of fractures compared to CCB-only users. However, there was no significant difference in fracture risk between concomitant users of CCBs and CYP3A4-inhibiting SSRIs versus non-CYP3A4 inhibiting SSRIs. The study suggests that short-term concomitant use of CCBs and SSRIs may increase fracture risk. [Extracted from the article]
