Juvenile idiopathic epilepsy in Arabian horses is not a single-gene disorder.

Abstract

This article focuses on investigating the genetic basis of juvenile idiopathic epilepsy (JIE), a seizure disorder affecting Arabian horse foals from birth to six months. Using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 60 affected foals and 120 genetically matched controls, the study found no evidence supporting JIE as a single-gene trait, instead suggesting a complex, polygenic inheritance involving multiple loci. Known single-gene coat color traits (gray and chestnut) were successfully mapped as positive controls, highlighting the contrast with JIE's genetic architecture. The findings emphasize the need for larger sample sizes and improved clinical phenotyping to further define candidate genetic regions, with the ultimate goal of enabling genetic testing and better management of JIE in Arabian horses.
